Vietnam in a TIMELINE of South East Asia since 500 BC
5/7/2020 up-date to original Paul Rowe article 17/4/2013
A common misconception about old traditional cultures is that they are old cultures, because their homelands have always been stable, allowing for plenty of community interaction time for cultural growth to occur.
The above 1936 Jean Despujols painting of rural Vietnam (then French Indochina)
could only be described as a timeless traditional rural scene.

History, however, shows that notion is rarely true.
South East Asia has been no exception to the rule.
I will use a video timeline to show this point.
As you watch the timeline,notice the changes to countries’
borders and names was constant.
Nations grew, shrank and/or disappeared all the time.
Borders are a contentious topic.
Borders can be changed via;
~ agreed negotiation, or
~ by an act of war.

The idea of traditional countries and cultures enjoying peaceful rural settings is shattered by this information.
